Why I Started Bold Road

Jeff CohenBill, the compensation expert, leaned back in his cushy black leather chair, pushed the chart across the table, and smiled. He was showing me what my net worth would be in 30 years. The figure was in the millions.

The catch: I’d have to spend 30 more years in my corporate job at American Express. Bill thought that was a great move. When I reach 60, I could take my millions and see the world.

I left the meeting feeling secure, but a big number kept gnawing at me: 30. Thirty years. Here I was being handed a ticket to financial freedom, yet I’d have to wait 30 years to cash it! Was waiting until 60 to start living worth it? That’s when I decided to take the Bold Road.

I migrated out of my corporate job and started my own company where I could do more of the things I really wanted to. I wanted to raise a family with my wife, write books, speak, travel, and stay in shape.

My self-created transition plan took place over 18 months. During that time, I negotiated a six month consulting gig with my employer, so I could immediately drop from working five to three days a week. I used my new free time to land consulting gigs based on my existing expertise. Once the transitional six months were up, I was able to end my corporate job entirely and turn to other dreams.

On the family side, first and foremost, my wife Carol and I had our son, Gabriel. On the business side, we bought our first investment property and secured tenants. I started generating passive income through internet marketing. I landed a book deal. I also took on writing and speaking gigs. The beauty of my new life — I now spend just 3-4 days per week working with the rest of my time devoted to family, fun, and teaching others what it is I did to create this life.
