Make the Most of the Snow Day

Do you remember when you were in school and you got word of an impending snow storm.  Your first thought was “please don’t be on a Saturday.”  The dream snow storm was one that fell the morning of a big exam, preferably one for which you should have studied.

But now you’re an adult and snow storms no longer save you from exams.  It’s March here in the Northeaast and we’re expecting 6-8 inches of snow Sunday night into Monday.  So that means we may all be holed up in our houses all day Monday.  The question is… how will you spend your time?  Will you plow through the entire first season of How I Met Your Mother?  Will you get addicted to your favorite computer game and go for your all-time high score?

Or will you use this newfound time to further your work less, earn more agenda.  I’m going to give you three things you could do if you’re feeling motivated as the flakes float down:

  1. Organize your network: gather up all those business cards you’ve collected and create a spreadsheet with names, contact info, commentary on your relationship, and why you should stay in touch with each person.  Then go one step further and draft emails to each person to keep the relationship alive.
  2. Review your New Year’s Resolutions: you probably wrote down at least a few goals related to your work less, earn more journey for 2009.  Check in on your progress and right the ship if you’ve sailed off course in the first two months of the year.
  3. Deep dive: what’s that one project you’ve been procrastinating on for months?  What’s the one thing you’ve said if you only had some concentrated time you could get it done?  This is your day to make it happen.  You’ve got all day so block off at least 2-3 hours to deep dive.
