Just Go For It

Recently, a family friend told me that leaving a corporate job right now was insane given the current economic uncertainty around the world. I’m here to tell you while a recession may be scary, it is not a reason to avoid going after something you believe in. Allow me to share nine reasons you should just go for it:

  1. When the economy turns around whose to say another problem won’t take it’s place? You could have a sick family member and that will make you stay in your place.
  2. Corporate jobs are no longer as safe as they used to be. Just ask someone on Wall Street and they’ll tell you that staying in a corporate job could be riskier than controlling your destiny in a small business venture.
  3. You will find health benefits and it won’t cost as much as you think. In fact, I’ve priced it and benefits on the outside cost about $5,000 more annually than corporate benefits.
  4. Even if you leave and fall flat on your face, good times will return in the corporate world and you’ll get a job. Look at it this way, did you ever think you’d see gas prices fall below $2 again? Anything is possible!
  5. Naysayers will always tell you to play it safe. But these are the same people that will tell you they knew you could do it all along when you make it big. So don’t listen to the negativity now and assume these folks will come around later.
  6. Downturns in the economy do not mean all aspects of going it alone will suffer. For example, generating passive income from a rental property is a great way to go right now with interest rates at an all time low and foreclosed folks looking to rent.
  7. You’ve got to believe in ready, fire, aim, not ready, aim, fire. If you get caught up in aiming all your life you’ll never try anything. Get your feet in the water and learn to make adjustments on the fly.
  8. Do you remember what you wanted to be when you grew up? Are you on the way to becoming that? If not, why not? Seize the moment and take charge of your life by beginning your own journey to living the life you were meant to live.
  9. You’ll regret it later if you don’t go for it now. Think about it, let’s say you work 40 years in a corporate job. Don’t you think if you take a two year break to see if you can go it alone, you’ll be much happier down the road than if you never tried in the first place?

P.S. Wondering why I like to make lists of nine and not ten? Well, nine happens to be my lucky number. It’s the date my wife and I met, the date we got engaged, the date we got married, and also the date our little guy was born.
