Balls or Blogs?

toddler ballsMy 18-month old son loves balls.  How do I know this is true?  Consider these facts:

  1. He says the world "ball" almost as often as the word "ma-ma."
  2. Sometimes he yells the word "ball" in his sleep.
  3. He doesn’t know his colors but he does know the difference between soccer, tennis, and basketballs.

As a writer, author, and speaker who works from home, the juggling act between working and parenting can be varied shades of grey.  Case in point . . . the other day I’m cranking out a blog when the little guy woddles upstairs, pushes my office door open, and leans in with a bright red ball.

The smile on his face says "come and join me . . . what could be more important than this ball?"  The expression on my end says "not now kid . . . I’m busy working."  Now, I’m not one to think I’ve damaged him for life by not dropping everything to play ball.  However, as an advocate for working less and earning more , it got me thinking . . . do the working and playing boundaries have to be so distinct?

I’m a realist and I know that juggling the little guy in one hand and important work calls in another is not possible.  But maybe, just maybe, you can take a minute to enjoy the moment, then finish the blog later.

So from here on out I’m choosing balls over blogs.  Those of you traveling the Bold Road with me can feel free to make the same decision.

Hey Jeff, I’m enjoying your blog. Same thing happened to me today except it was with my 15 year old daughter. We ended up surfing for three hours instead of me working and her doing some summer school work. Now which would we remember a year from now - working? or fun in the Waves?

Keep up the good work.

David
