Don’t Fret the Down Economy!

I hear the following statement all the time… “Working less and earning more sounds great but it’s impossible in a down economy.” Folks will go on to say… “You’re lucky to even have a job with the economy in such turmoil.”

Look, I understand the fears with the stock market plummeting, Wall Street firms going belly up every day, and a pivotal presidential election rapidly approaching. But do these fears really mean you can’t make money and work less at the same time? Did you ever think about the fact that some industries actually thrive under these conditions:

• With home ownership mortgages in such flux many folks are choosing to rent. My wife and I have had no trouble in this environment keeping our two family rental property 100% rented.
• With companies going through rounds of layoffs, suddenly consultants are a better option. There’s no overhead, no long term commitment, and no benefits to pay. The consulting side of my business has reaped these rewards.
• With so many folks losing their jobs unexpectedly, many are looking for new ways to make money. What better time to rethink your career priorities and consider a new lifestyle… a working less, earning more one!

Bottom line… there’s nothing wrong with some fear as the economy finds its footing. Just don’t let it stall your thinking entirely and give up on the dream of finding ample free time and ample income. Yes, you can have your cake and eat it too!
